Fred Williamson spent his childhood in his hometown, Gary, where he finished high school education at Froebel High School in 1955. After matriculation, he enrolled at Northwestern University, where he earned a BA degree in Architecture in 1960.Before Fred became a renowned actor, he played football for seven years in the NFL and AFL, for teams the Pittsburgh Steelers through the 1960 season, then he moved to the AFL and played for the Oakland Raiders from 1961 until 1964, and from 1965 until 1967 for the Kansas City Chiefs. During his career he made three All-Star game appearances in 1961, 1962 and 1963, and with the Chiefs he became the AFL champion in 1966, which largely increased his net worth.

After he decided to retire, he focused on acting, making his debut appearance in the TV series “Ironside” in 1968. Before the 1960s ended he made several brief appearances in such TV series as “The Outsider” (1969), and “Julia” (1969-1971).In the 1970s, his career began to improve, and he made a big screen appearance in the film “MASH” (1970), with Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould in lead roles.
