Lawrence attended Wilkes University, however, he became more focused on acting, and switched to the High School of Art and Design. Following his graduation, he joined the Negro Ensemble Company, where he took his education to the next level, and became ready for a career as an actor.

He made his debut in the film “Claudine” (1974), alongside James Earl Jones and Diahann Carroll, after which he landed a leading role in the film “Coolie High” (1975). The same year, Lawrence was selected for the role of Freddie ‘Boom Boom’ Washington in the TV series “Welcome Back, Kotter” (1975-1979), which not only helped him establish himself as an actor, but also increased his net worth. By the end of the 1970s, Lawrence also was the lead in the film “Youngblood” (1978), increasing further his net worth.

In the first half of the 1980s Lawrence only appeared in the film “For The Love Of It” (1980), but in several series, including “Lewis & Clark” (1981), “Rituals” (1984), but only in minor roles.
