Mithun Chakraborty is the son of Santirani and Basantokumar Chakraborty. He attended the Scottish Church College of the University of Calcutta, from which he graduated with a degree in Chemistry. Afterwards, he enrolled at the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune, where he also earned a degree. Before he became an actor, he was very active as a member of the radical Naxalite fold, however, he left it when his brother was killed.

Mithun’s professional acting career began in 1976, when he made his debut appearance in the role of Ghinua in the film “Mrigayaa”, directed by Mrinal Sen. Two year later, he appeared in the successful film “Mera Rakshak” (1978), which was followed by the role of CBI Officer Gopi in “Surakksha” (1979), after which he was chosen to play in a number of lead roles in other film projects, such as “Tarana” (1979) and Basu Charrerjee’s film “Prem Vivah” in the same year, which marked the beginning of an increase of his net worth.
