Boyle’s family eventually moved to Philadelphia, where his father worked as a television personality, hosting the Western show “Chuck Wagon Pete” and the children’s program “Uncle Pete Presents the Little Rascals”. He attended St. Francis de Sales School and West Philadelphia Catholic High School For Boys. Upon matriculating, he enrolled in La Salle University in Philadelphia, graduating with a BA in 1857, and attended a Roman Catholic teaching congregation at the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, but left and attended Officer Candidate School, being commissioned as an ensign in the United States Navy. However, his navy career ended after he suffered a nervous breakdown.
Boyle had worked as a cameraman on the cooking show “Television Kitchen” before he moved to New York City to pursue a career in acting. Once in New York, he took acting classes while working as a postal worker, waiter and bouncer. He joined a touring production of Neil Simon’s play “The Odd Couple”, and later Chicago’s “Second City” improvisational comedy troupe, making his Broadway debut with the 1971 “Story Theatre”.
