Her mother is the opera singer Maria Ewing. Her parents divorced when she was eight, but she has five brothers and sisters, as her father had several marriages. The father had her debut in “The Camomile Lawn”, and she appeared in several television productions at the age of 10. She matriculated from the private Roedean School in Brighton, then majored in English literature at the University of Cambridge but dropped out in her second year to pursue an acting career.

Her professional career really began on the theatre stage in 2002 in “Mrs Warren’s Profession” by George Bernard Shaw, directed by her father.
