After earning a college baseball scholarship, Dan attended Pepperdine University in Malibu, California, where he joined its Pepperdine Waves baseball team. Due to his good performances, in his first season he was rewarded with West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year honors. Later he earned WCC Player of the Year and second team College All-America recognitions. After graduation, he turned pro when he was drafted as pick No. 72 overall in the second round of the 2001 MLB draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Dan debuted as a pro in 2001 as a member of the Cardinals’ Short-Season A affiliate team New Jersey Cardinals in New York-Penn League. His MLB debut occurred in June 2003 when the St. Louis Cardinals faced the San Francisco Giants. In 2004, Dan was traded to the Oakland Athletics where he spent the next three seasons.
