Theodore Ernest Els was born on October 17, 1969 in Johannesburg, South Africa. He started playing golf when eight years old. At thirteen years old, he had already won the Championship of the Eastern Transvaal Junior. In 1984, he rose to prominence winning the Championship of the Junior World Golf. At seventeen years of age, Ernie Els broke the golf age record and won the South African Amateur Championship.

In 1989 Ernie Els began playing golf professionally, this way opening his net worth account. Currently he plays on the European Tour which he joined in 1992, and on the PGA Tour which Els joined in 1994.
