P. J. attended Winnfield High School in Louisiana, and after matriculating he went on to enroll into Louisiana Tech, where he played for the basketball team. He averaged 10.1 points and 8.4 rebounds per game, and finished his college basketball career being their 2nd all-time leader in blocks and fifth in rebounds. In 1992, Brown was drafted for the NBA by the New Jersey Nets, but played in 1992–1993 HEBA A1 season for Panasonic B.C. – his average was 17.0 points. P.J. started playing in the NBA in 1993, in his first season appearing in 79 games, starting 54 and having a average of 5.7 points per game. In 1994-95 season, he had 1.7 blocks per game and 8.1 points, and was selected to appear in the 1996 NBA commercial. His playing time was increased in the 1996 season, however, he ended up being a free agent, and was signed by the Miami Heat for the position of a point forward, playing in 80 games with 32.4 minutes and 9.5 points per game.

Brown was named the NBA All-Defensive Second Team after his team won the Atlantic Division Title. His performance was up to scratch and helped the Heat advance in the playoffs.
