During his junior career, Richard posted a 44-7 singles record which helped him rank no. 1 in the world. In 2002 he made his professional debut at the Tennis Masters Series Tournament, the youngest player to ever qualify for the event, and then the youngest player to win a tour-level main draw match. He joined the 2002 French Open, becoming the second youngest player to participate in the tournament, leading him to the ATP top 200.

In 2004, he reached his first ATP Tournament and would later win the mixed doubles trophy at the French Open, partnering Tatiana Golovin. After missing several weeks of the 2005 season, Gasquet returned and won back-to-back Challenger titles. He had a 10 match winning streak, even defeating no. 1 Roger Federer in a Masters Series tournament. He would win his first Grand Slam singles match at Roland Garros, and would then get his first ATP Title, which also led to his Davis Cup debut. In 2006, he had a rough start during the first half of the season but would later win two titles in the year. His improvement started to show and he reached the final of the Masters Series before being defeated by Federer. He then won a third title in the year in Lyon. After a bad 2014, he returned in 2015 to reach his third Grand Slam Semifinal at Wimbledon, and won two more ATP Titles in 2016 despite injury struggles. One of his latest endeavors was the Hopman Cup in which he played for France.
