Khali is one of seven children born into the poor Hindu family of Tandi Devi and Jwala Ram. In order to make ends meet, he was forced to do a series of odd jobs including serving as a security guard. Due to his rather noticeable physical appearance, he was recruited into the Punjab Police service in 1993. However, after several years of wrestling training, in 2000 he relocated to the US where he was selected for the specialized wrestling training camp. Under the alias Giant Singh, he debuted as a professional wrestler in October 2000 as a member of All Pro Wrestling. This engagement provided the basis of the current net worth of The Great Khali.

In 2001 he moved to San Francisco, California, where he was signed by the World Championship Wrestling, but after eight months he transferred to Japan, and signed a contract with the New Japan Pro-Wrestling. In the course of the next several years, between 2002 and 2006, The Great Khali honed his wrestling skills through various promotions, including the Mexican Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre as well as the All Japan Pro Wrestling.
