To begin with, David and his four siblings were raised in the family of two teachers in Sycamore, Illinois; David suffered from dyslexia and had difficulties in reading, and the process of learning was subsequently described by the journalist Malcolm Gladwell. The family of Boies moved to California in 1954, where, David was educated at Fullerton Union High School. Then he matriculated at the University of Redlands, graduated from Northwestern University in 1964, with a BS. In 1966, he graduated from Yale Law School earning a degree magna cum laude in law, and a year later he earned his Master’s degree in law at New York University School of Law.

David Boies pursued his professional career initially working as an attorney in the law firm based in New York City called Cravath, Swaine & Moore LLP – in 1973, he became a partner of the previously mentioned company. Meanwhile, he held the position of Chief Counsel and Staff Director of the United States Senate Antitrust Subcommittee in 1978, as well as working as Staff Director of the United States Senate Judiciary Committee in 1979. In 1997, he left the firm because of clients’ objection to Boies representation, and immediately founded his own law firm Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP. Currently, it is one of the most prestigious law firms in New York City and around the USA.

During his professional career as a lawyer, Boies has participated in a number of notable cases, including the USA against Microsoft in which Boies represented the Justice Department. After he won the trial, he was called “mad genius” and “a brilliant trial lawyer” by Washington Monthly. More, he represented the Vice President of the USA Al Gore in the case Bush v. Gore after the presidential election held in 2000. The lawyer represented the Association of the National Basketball Players during the NBA lockout in 2011. In 2016, he worked as the attorney as the same time sitting on the board of directors of the privately held health technology and medical laboratory services company Theranos. Currently, he sits on the Board of Trustees of a non-profit, non-partisan institution, the National Constitution Centre which is located in Philadelphia.

During his career, Boies has been rewarded many times including with the Milton Gould Award for Outstanding Advocacy (1996), Lifetime Achievement Award from LD Access Foundation (2001), Jr. Award from the University of Virginia School of Law (2002). In 2000, Boies was awarded an honorary Doctor’s degree in law from the University of Redlands as well as Honorary Doctorate of Laws, New York Law School in 2007.

Finally, in the personal life of the lawyer, he is married to Mary Schuman. One personal interest is in collecting wines.
