Hal attended Centenary College, and during his time there, proved a promising golf player – he was named Golf Magazine’s 1980 College Player of the Year. He won 14 tournaments as part of the College team, and led the Gents to the NCAA Tournament. Some of the tournaments he won as an amateur include the 1979 Western Amateur and the 1980 North and South Amateur, and was also named an All American.
Hal Sutton then joined the PGA Tour in 1981, and became one of the tour’s young stars. He had his first win at the 1982 Walt Disney World Golf Classic against Bill Brithen in 1983, Sutton won the Tournament Players Championship which would lead to his PGA Championship win in the same year. However, after the victory he went winless, having a drought from 1987 to 1994, but then rejuvenated his career in 1995 with a win at the BC Open. Three years later, he would win the Valero Texas Open and the Tour Championship to finish as fifth in the PGA Tour money list. In 2000, he defeated Tiger Woods in the final group of The Players Championship, and also won at the Greater Greensboro Chrysler Classic leading to him getting into the top four on the PGA Tour money list, with his net worth increasing significantly thanks to these victories. In 2001, he won at the Shell Houston Open, increasing his season winnings to $1.7 million.
Hal also appeared as part of four US Ryder Cup Teams from 1985 to 2002. He was the non-playing captain of the team in 2004, but was criticized for his performance after Europe beat the USA, especially for pairing Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson. In 2007, Sutton would win the Payne Steward Award for his charitable contributions. He was also given the 2004 Omar N. Bradley Spirit of Independence Award and the Golf Writers Association of America’s 2006 Charlie Bartlett Award. In 2008, Hal became eligible to play on the Champions Tour and started playing there. His net worth continued to build thanks to numerous playing opportunities.
For his personal life, it is known that Sutton is married to Stacy. He has done a lot of charity work throughout his career, helping to establish the Christus Schumpert Sutton Children’s Hospital in Shreveport, and also raising more than $2 million to help Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita victims, alongside fellow golfers Kelly Gibson and David Toms.
