Neil was educated at the Latin School of Chicago. Then he studied at Vassar College, but eventually he graduated from Columbia University in 1991. While still a student he began editing the book “Radiotext” which was published in 1993. Then, he was employed at the tabloid newspaper The Village Voice in which he did various jobs such as fact checking, editing and working as a critic as well as a reporter.
