Stan is of Czech ancestry, as his grandfather moved from Czechoslovakia in 1946; he is one of three children to Wolfram, farmer and Isabelle, educator. Stan went to the Rudolf Steiner School in Crissier, but left school when he turned 15 in order to pursue his career in tennis, although he continued his education through the French organization CNED.

He entered the international junior tennis events at age 14, and in 2003 he won the French Open Junior championships, thanks to which result he ended at No. 7 on the junior list.

As early as 2002, Stan turned pro, and in the first three years he managed to reach the top 60 players, ending at 51st place. The following season he won his first ATP title at Umag, Croatia, in which his opponent was Novak Djokovic who, however, gave up the title without a fight, due to fatigue. This success earned him 29th place on the ATP list.

In 2008 he was a participant in the Masters held in Rome, in which he reached the final, but was defeated by Novak Djokovic, however, this propelled him into the top 10 players in the world. Furthermore, he and Roger Federer teamed for the Beijing Olympics, in which they won the gold medal, defeating Simon Aspelin and Thomas Johansson of Sweden. From 2010, his career took a tremendous sweep forward, and 2013 was his breakout season; he won one 250 series event, the

Portugal Open, lost to Nadal in the finals of the 1000 series event, Madrid, and was also the runner-up in Rosmalen Championships, Netherlands, losing to Nicolas Mahut. All of this success increased his net worth, and raised his ATP standings, reaching 10th place once again.

2014 season was the best of his career yet, as he won his first Grand Slam, the Australian Open by defeating Rafael Nadal in four sets, but before that he eliminated Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals in five sets, and in the semifinals he was better than Tomáš Berdych. Also that year, Wawrinka won Monte-Carlo Masters 1000 series, defeating Roger Federer in the finals, and the Chennai Open 250 series. The next season was even better, winning his second Grand Slam, the French Open, in which the victim was again Djokovic, this time in four sets. He won the Japan Open, Chennai Open again, and the Rotterdam Open, all of which increased his net worth by a large margin.

Most recently, Wawrinka won three titles in 2016, the Chennai Open – his fourth title of the Indian event – Dubai Championships, and Geneva Open. He missed the 2016 Olympics because of his back problems, but then played in Cincinnati, losing in the third round to Grigor Dimitrov.
