As a child, Rocco learned recipes his mother, especially traditional Italian dishes, and furthered his skills by enrolling at the Culinary Institute of America when he was sixteen. Upon graduation, he spent some time in France where he studied at the Jardin de Cygne. DiSpirito also graduated from Boston University, with a bachelor’s degree in business, then upon moving back to New York, he worked at “Lespinasse”, the four-star French restaurant which was one of the city’s most popular places during the ‘90s. However, in 1997, Rocco opened his own restaurant, “Union Pacific” and received all the best reviews for his cuisine, and was soon named “Best New Chef” by Food and Wine magazine. In 2000, Rocco started appearing on Food Network TV program in the show “The Melting Pot”, and received another acknowledgement, when he was named “America’s Most Exciting Young Chef” by Gourmet magazine in the same year. Three years later, he became the host of his own reality show on NBC, “The Restaurant”, which attracted more than nine million viewers. The same year, DiSpirito earned more popularity with the publishing of his first cookbook, “Flavor”, for which he received a James Beard Award in 2004. He went on to write his second book, “Rocco’s Italian American”, on which he worked with his mother in telling the story of their family’s journey, as well as sharing numerous recipes.

In addition to his television appearances, Rocco also hosted a radio program on a New York radio station and has written several more cookbooks, including “Rocco Gets Real”, which is also the title of his television show. More recently, he has hosted a weekly reality TV cooking competition, “Rocco’s Dinner Party’ in 2012, and is hosting the TV program “Now Eat This!” which debuted in September the same year. His other appearances include TV shows like “Castle”, “The Choice”, “Top Chef” and “Dancing with the Stars” in 2008, placing ninth with professional dancer Karina Smirnoff.

When it comes to his private life, Rocco was married to Natalie David, but the couple divorced in 2000. He was then engaged to actress Yvonne Scio, but the two also split up. Rumor has it that he is currently dating model Sena Cech.
