Hexum moved to Los Angeles to pursue a musical career in the late 80s, but his friend Chad Sexton convinced him to return to Omaha and help in forming a band. Soon after, Aaron Wills and Jim Watson joined them, and they started the band called 311.

In 1990, Hexum formed his record company What Have You Records and released the band’s debut album “Dammit!”. It’s a very rare collection, and it can only be found on cassettes, as well as their second and third releases called “Unity” in 1991 and “Hydroponic” in 1992. However, their first commercial success came in 1993 when they recorded “Music” that achieved gold status and reached No. 37 on the Top Heatseekers chart, which only increased his net worth.

The band’s next album “Grassroots” (1994) also made golden status with over 500,000 copies sold, and peaked at No. 8 on Top Heatseekers and No. 193 on The Billboard 200 chart. It topped the Top Heatseekers and reached the No. 12 position on The Billboard 200. The singles “Down”, “Don’t Stay Home”, and “All Mixed Up” were successful, and thanks to this huge commercial break, Hexum’s net worth significantly increased.

By the end of the ‘90s, 311 had released two more albums: “Transistor” (1997) including rap segments in their music, and “Soundsystem” in 1999. “Transistor” achieved platinum status and peaked at No. 4 place on the Billboard 200 chart, while “Soundsystem” earned golden status and reached No. 9 on Billboard 200.

In the 2000s, 311 recorded four studio albums: “From Chaos” (2001), “Evolver” (2003), “Don’t Tread on Me” (2005), and “Uplifter” (2009), with the latter reaching No. 2 position on Billboard 200 chart, the band’s highest to date. They released “Universal Pulse” in 2011 and “Stereolithic” in 2014, their two latest albums. Hexum also formed The Nick Hexum Quintet and recorded an album called “My Shadow Pages” in 2013, sales also adding to his net worth.
