Read more about Prince Andrew Biography

Prince Andrew is the third child and second son of Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh; the Archbishop of Canterbury, Geoffrey Fisher, baptised him in the Palace’s Music Room in April 1960. As the case with his other siblings, governesses took care of Andrew during his childhood, before he was sent to the Heatherdown School near Ascot in Berkshire, and later to Gordonstoun, in northern Scotland, to continue his education. Andrew matriculated in 1979 with A-Levels in English, history, economics, and political science, but decided not to go to university and joined the Britannia Royal Naval College at Dartmouth instead.

Andrew spent time with the Royal Air Force at RAF Leeming, training to become a pilot and learning to fly Gazelle helicopter. In 1982, he participated in the Falklands War after Argentina invaded the Islands, which are under Great Britain’s jurisdiction. In late 1983, Andrew learned to fly the Lynx helicopter, and in 1984, he was promoted to Lieutenant. He spent the next several years with the rank of Lieutenant before was promoted to Lieutenant-Commander in February 1992, after passed the ship command examination. From 1995 to 1996, the Duke of York served as a Senior Pilot of 815 Naval Air Squadron and was promoted to Commander in April 1999. before in 2001 retiring from the Active List of the Navy.

It is sometimes difficult to differentiate between the Prince’s official, royal duties, and his personal activities. From 2001 to 2011, Prince Andrew served as the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment with UK Trade & Investment, which is part of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills. Andrew is also a Patron of a charity dedicated to research into the prevention and treatment of blindness and associated eye disease, called Fight for Sight. In 2013, he became the Patron of London Metropolitan University and the University of Huddersfield.

Regarding his less-than-private personal life, Prince Andrew was married to Sarah Ferguson from 1986 to 1996 and has two daughters with her. Andrew knew Sarah since their childhood, and they married at Westminster Abbey in July 1986, but he was frequently absent because of commitment to the Royal Navy, so the marriage became rather shaky. They separated in March 1992 and divorced in 1996, but agreed to share custody of their two daughters. Prince Andrew helped Sarah to overcome her financial crisis and bad investments by settling her considerable debts. The Duke of York is an avid golfer and skier, who owns an exclusive skiing chalet in Verbier, Switzerland.

  • Sarah will talk to me about someone and I don’t know who she’s talking about, but if she talks to my mother, the two of them will know exactly – and across several generations, too.
  • The Queen’s intelligence network is a hell of a lot better than anyone’s in this palace. Bar none. She knows everything. I don’t know how she does it. And she sees everything.
  • You, I, we all encounter behaviors that we might say, I wouldn’t do that. But she has a huge amount of contact with how people live. She sees more hospices and sink estates than most people.

  • I’ll tell you where the injustice is. It’s with the person earning £12,000 to £15,000-a-year who is being asked to be restrained by their business or employer. Yet the taxpayer has bailed out the banks, so why are they not showing restraint?
