Kimbra is a daughter of an orthopedic nurse mother, and Ken Johnson, who worked as a head doctor at the University of Waikato’s student health center. Kimbra already started writing songs when she was ten, while two years later, her father bought her a guitar. She went to Hillcrest High School and participated in the Rockquest musical competition, winning the second place back in 2004.

Kimbra began singing in public, and even sang the New Zealand national anthem in 2002 in front of 27,000 people at the NPC rugby union final. 2007r was the breakthrough point for her, as she won the Juice TV award for the Best Breakthrough music video, for her song “Simply on My Lips”. Soon after, Mark Richardson – who worked with such names as Paula Abdul and Jamiroquai – noticed Kimbra and offer her a contract with his new record company Forum 5, after which she moved to live in Melbourne, Australia.

Kimbra worked on her debut studio album from 2008 to 2011, and finally, in late August 2011, “Vows” came out and reached No. 14 on the Billboard 200 chart, and also topped the New Zealand NZ Artists Albums Chart. The singles “Settle Down”, Cameo Lover”, “Two Way Street”, and “Good Intent” were quite popular also, and the commercial success of the album helped Kimbra to increase her net worth significantly. It achieved the platinum status in both Australia and New Zealand.

Between the two albums, Kimbra traveled a lot, and performed in Australia, Europe, and the US, before recordng a track with Belgian-born Australian multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, Gotye in 2012. The song became a worldwide hit and won two Grammy Awards in 2013, for the Record of the Year and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Thanks to the song’s popularity and success, everyone knew who Kimbra is and that also bring her a lot of money to her bank account.

Following that achievement, Kimbra moved to Los Angeles, California and started working on her second album. In August 2014, her second studio album “The Golden Echo” saw the light of day, and peaked at No. 43 on the US Billboard 200 chart. Kimbra worked with such artists as John Legend, John Robinson, Matt Bellamy, and Thundercat, among others, who helped her to record the singles “90s Music”, “Goldmine”, and “Miracle”. She then went on tour in the US and also featured on Bilal’s song “Holding It Back” from his “In Another Life” album. Most recently, Kimbra is working in the studio with record producer Skrillex and singer/songwriter Noonie Bao.
