To begin with, Martie is the daughter of Barbara Trask and Paul Erwin. She grew up in Addison, a suburb of Dallas, with one older and one younger sister. Encouraged by her parents, both teachers at private schools, she began playing classical violin at the age of five, and started her musical career in the orchestra of the school. Playing various instruments she was a member of a high school bluegrass quartet, and besides the violin she plays a variety of other string instruments, including the viola, mandolin, double bass and guitar.

The sisters were highly interested in street music, visited many Bluegrass festivals playing together with the siblings Troy and Sharon Gilchrist. From 1984 to 1989, the four students played in a bluegrass band entitled Blue Night Express, while still studying at the private Greenhill School in Addison, Texas. In 1987, Maguire won 2nd place in the annual national competition for violin in Winfield, Kansas. After matriculation from high school, she studied at the Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, from 1988 to 1989.

In 1989, Emily Robinson, Martie Maguire and Natalie Maines founded the female country band The Dixie Chicks, based in Dallas. The band was successful with hits like “Wide Open Spaces”, “Cowboy Take Me Away” and “Long Time Gone” released in the 1990s. The girls became widely known for their joyful nature, musical instrumentation and soaring ballads. They were nominated for Grammy Awards 23 times, 13 of which they won. In 2007, during the ceremony of the 49th Grammy awards, the Dixie Chicks won all five awards for which they were nominated, including the most prestigious: the Best Song of the year, the Best Recording of the year and the Best Album of the year. The trio is the most successful women’s band in the USA with more than 30 million albums sold.
